Giant Squid! Robots! Opera singers…and rugby
The Hong Kong Sevens is officially a 3-day rugby tournament featuring the best teams in the world. In reality, it is an open air cocktail party with rugby games as part of the entertainment. Highlights include various performers in their fifties singing songs from the 80’s, dancing airplanes, dancing robots and dragons. A man dressed as a crab won a foot race against a cookie. 40,000 people had a great time, everyone seemed happy and they all sang “Sweet Caroline” repeatedly.
By the way, the rugby is great. The New Zealand women’s team is unbeatable, and the American men’s team is unconscionable. The event covers 3 days, but that’s only so they can fit in a DJ, the aforementioned opera singer (excellent), the Vengaboys, whose pronouns are Yeah! and Woo! and various other performers. Members of the audience take the opportunity to dress up in every type of costume you could think of, and many you couldn’t, or shouldn’t.
